On the edge of the seaside city
of Mumbai is its first planned
commercial precinct: Ballard Estate.

It came up in the early 20th century
and was planned by architect George
Wittet on land owned by the
Bombay Port Trust.

Ballard Estate stands out for its uniform
Edwardian buildings, and set the stage
for what would become India's financial
capital. Today, the neighbourhood houses
art galleries and boutiques.
